How much does it cost to do a will?

Attorney Tom Olsen: When we do a will for people, we typically do four documents. We do the will, itself. We do a living will declaration, where you ask that you not be kept alive by machines. We do a healthcare surrogate form, and we do a financial power of attorney. If we're doing those four documents for a single person, typical fee is $550. I don't mind saying that on air. If we're doing those four documents for a married couple, meaning four for her and four for him, typical fee is $750 and I think we're right in the market place as far as those fees are concerned.
Chrissy: Tom, from the clients and the people that we talk to on a daily basis, they continue to share that that's very fair and reasonable.
Attorney Tom Olsen: Yes, well not only does it include doing those four documents, of course, it includes meeting with me or you and it includes us counseling them on easy ways to avoid probate. Because getting those documents done really is part one. Part two is talking about easy ways to avoid probate for people and that can be just as important.
Chrissy: Exactly. You're right, a lot of times it's that consultation which points them in the right direction and then often times they will want to do those four documents. Those four documents, again, we feel are critical because it is about when somebody passes away, but it's also about making sure that they have someone or multiple people in charge if they are alive but not competent.
