Should you add your spouse's name to the deed to your home?

Gwen: I have a question regarding the deed to a house, I heard the earlier answer about the deed. Our situation is when we first bought our home, we bought it about seven, eight years ago, we bought it from a builder and they used my husband's VA benefit. We didn't realize until I went to an HOA meeting, and we had to vote on something. on something. They said, "Ma'am, your name isn't on the deed," and we were like, "What?" We're trying to get me onto the deed at this point. We're married. I'm actually paying the mortgage, my husband's in a disability situation.

Attorney Tom Olsen: Got it.

Gwen: How do we go about doing that and how much would something like that run?

Attorney Tom Olsen: Gwen, doing this absolutely, positively is the right thing to do. No, don't wait, get it done. Good news in this situation, Gwen, is that you will not have to pay the state of Florida documentary stamps. Gwen, through my office, you could expect fees and costs of $475. Gwen, to do that deed would require both his signature and your signature. Gwen, I invite you to come next week. I'd love to take care of that for you.

Gwen: That'd be great. We'll definitely do that. That's a lot less than I thought it was going to be.

Attorney Tom Olsen: Awesome.

Gwen: I'll make an appointment. Thank you so very much.

Attorney Tom Olsen: All right, Gwen. Thank you for coming. We appreciate it. That's Olsen Law Group in Orlando, olsenlawgroup.com, although we handle clients throughout the state of Florida.
