Some history of lawyer advertising in Florida

Attorney Tom Olsen: A measure of success for me is how many Google reviews we get per week. You always get some really great ones from that, all the people that you help. I think we're up to about right around 190 so far.

Attorney Robert Hidock: Oh, wow. That's great.

Tom: Yes, and what I've found, of course, Olsen Law Group, we're into marketing like any other law firm. We're out there trying to get people to learn about Olsen Law Group and the services that we can supply to them. I tell you that the more Google reviews, the more people that are finding us on the internet.

Robert: It is just the way I guess the world works. When I first started as an attorney, it wasn't Google Marketing. It was Yellow Page ads and word of mouth, but now word of mouth becomes Google reviews, right? It gets that word out there so much faster, so people know who you are.

Tom: Well, let's harp on that for just a minute. That is that I've been a lawyer since 1981, and when I became a lawyer in Florida, 1981, all forms of lawyer advertising were strictly prohibited. None. Not, not at all, none of it. Then, of course, some smart lawyer stood the Florida bar and took it all the way to Florida Supreme Court and said, "That's a violation of free speech," and Florida Bar or Florida Supreme Court said, "Yes, that's right." That opened up the door to Yellow Page advertising by lawyers and has just grown leaps and bounds since then.

Robert: Yes, I could never imagine if you couldn't advertise or market at all. I mean, that's most of the business style is marketing.

Tom: It certainly is. Well, I have to say most of the personal injury business is because that's what I see on the TV all the time.

Robert: All the time.

Tom: Olsen Law Group does not do personal injury, but clearly, there must be a lot of money in that field.

Robert: I would assume yes.

Tom: Okay.
