Should you pre-sign your car titles in blank before you die to avoid probate?
Attorney Tom Olsen: Donna, you're on WDBO, go ahead.
Donna: Hi, Tom, thank you for taking my call. I just wanted to ask. I'm making up a packet for my sons for when it's my time to go to glory. I have my car titles. Should I go ahead and sign my car title and put it in the packet, or what?
Tom: I don't think that's necessary, Donna, because cars, boats, vehicles, motorhomes, RVs don't go through probate. When you pass away, Donna, your kids can take that car title, together with your death certificate, down to the tag and title office, and they will retitle it in your kids' names. No problem. No probate required, Donna. You're doing the right thing by gathering up this information and making sure they can find your car title, but I think that's as far as you need to take it.
Donna: Okay. Well, listen, thank you. I listened to you for years and I never thought I'd be calling, but I'm glad you're there. Thank you.
Tom: Thank you, Donna. We appreciate it.
